Modell "Zeit-Basis"

Englische Version: siehe unten / English version: see below

"Zeit-Basis" is the completely authentic design of a watch with the objective of reacquainting customers with craftsmanship and handmade articles – whether it involves the modification of a clockwork or the new creation of a watchcase that is distinct from industrial mass production. In this process, the journey is the reward and arduous methods of manual labor or the involvement of small mechanisms take on an almost meditative character. Thus, unique time-pieces are created, proving the possibility of manufacturing something special with relatively low technical effort.

The watchcase consists of three components: a midsection made of aluminum, a glass base and a bezel produced of V2A steel. All three parts are cut from their respective material plates and are then cylindrically turned. The same process is used for the steel faces. The diameter of the watchcases measures 39 mm (not including the crown), the height measures 13 mm.

The watch hands are taken from warehouse stock. Their shape will be slightly altered and then lacquered. The screw-retained crowns are taken from inventory as well. I will produce the corresponding tube from a screw with the appropriate fine-pitch thread through boring and turning.

The clockwork consists of a PUW 360 hand-wound movement from German manufacture from the 60s with 18,000 vibrations per hour. The altering the shapes of keepers and bridges, the adding milled ornaments to the plate and ratchet wheel, the manually blueing of screws as well as the subsequent application of rhodium plating turn a standard clockwork into a unique piece of art that is showcased through the glass base. The face of the watch is protected by sapphire crystal.

The idea of attaching the watch strap by means of an open steel ring, which is placed in a groove and unable to change its shape in response to pressure, makes its own statement. The band consists of high-quality Shell Cordovan horse leather, considered to produce some of the most durable straps in the industry.

I have deliberately omitted to place any logo on the face, the strap, clasp or box in order to let the understated design of the watch speak for itself. I hope that the efforts expended in, but also the enjoyment derived from the design and manufacture become apparent to the customer. The watch possess the allure of the slightly unfinished, the character of a prototype. Mechanical perfection is not the point as processing traces are to be consciously observed and the imperfect result is to arouse emotions.

I hope to have stirred your curiosity for my project. Responses and feedback – in whatever form – will be highly appreciated.

Yours, Peter Speyerer
